Delia Owens Where the Crawdads Sing (Putnam, $26.00). It’s the current # 1 New York Times bestseller and well worth reading. If you don’t get emotionally involved in the story of Kya, the “Marsh Girl,” you would have to be the most heartless insensitive soul on the planet. The poor kid is left alone when she is nine or ten years old (she’s not sure when she was born), abandoned by her siblings and parents, living in a shack on the marsh land of North Carolina.

What follows as she struggles in the 1960’s to learn to read, even to survive, staying away from everyone but the black owner of a filling station is heart-warming and a true 20th century tear jerk. The writing is luscious as Owens describes the swamp land and I have to give the book a solid A with my heartiest recommendation. Have a Kleenex handy at the end.
