I was browsing my local independent bookstore (yay indies!) when I picked up Shed No Tears by Caz Frear (Harper, 26.99). Mystery always gets my attention, so I sprung for it. And British cop books are always cerebral. The detective is unlikely to shoot it out with the bad guys at the end.

Was I ever stunned! Shed No Tears is probably the best British procedural I’ve ever read in the genre and is now on my short list for all time favorites books and characters. After getting started, I realized it is the 3rd in a series featuring young London DC Cat Kinsella – a pistol and simultaneously a bit of a mess in her personal life. How many London constables have a father who runs with the mafia?

I’ll go back and start with a review of the first book Sweet Little Lies (Harper, 16.99), but wanted to give an immediate kudos to Caz Frear. It is the kind of book that makes you want to hurry home to get to and stay up late to finish.
